RA as Amavata
Ayurveda explains Amavata as ama (poorly digested residue) combining with Vata and lodging in the joints. So the first step is to improve digestion and clear ama, before oil-based therapies. Heavy, cold, curd-based and late-night meals are reduced.
Our plan
- Light, warm, easily digested diet with ginger and dry-heat methods as advised
- Ayurvedic medicines to clear ama and reduce inflammation
- Virechana and Basti in stable patients
- Gentle movement to keep joints mobile
- Regular review with blood reports

Frequently asked questions
Can Ayurveda help rheumatoid arthritis?
Ayurvedic diet, medicines and Panchakarma can help reduce pain, stiffness and flare-ups when used alongside your rheumatologist's treatment. Results vary.
Should I stop my RA medicines?
No. Never stop or reduce them on your own; any change is decided with your rheumatologist.
Is oil massage good for RA?
Not during an active flare with ama. Dry heat and diet come first; oil therapies are added later when suitable.

Rheumatoid arthritis: why Ama must be cleared first
In Amavata, undigested Ama travels with Vata and settles in the joints, giving swelling, morning stiffness and pain in small joints. Oil massage on swollen joints can worsen it, so treatment starts with digestion and dry heat.
- Stage 1: Langhana (light diet), Ama-digesting herbs, Valuka Sweda (hot sand fomentation)
- Stage 2: Virechana or Vaitarana Basti when suitable
- Stage 3: joint-nourishing therapies and Rasayana once swelling settles
- Diet: warm, light food; avoid curd, cold food, fish and heavy sweets
- Continue your rheumatologist’s medicines; never stop them suddenly
