Ayurvedic Abhyangam Treatment

(Synchronized Massage) with Steam Bath

This relaxing and refreshing full body massage is a masterpiece of Kerala Ayurveda. It is done with medicated herbal oils by two therapists in a synchronized manner for 45 minutes. The number of strokes and pressure vary with the condition of the individual. This massage is indicated daily to prevent aging and degeneration. This seven-position therapy will treat the whole body physically, mentally and emotionally while balancing the doshas. Its rhythmic motion helps to relieve joints and muscles from stiffness and helps in freeing body movements. This stimulating treatment increases blood circulation, which in turn encourages quick removal of metabolic wastes while providing relief in conditions such as anxiety, fatigue, circulatory disorders, arthritic problems, backaches, and injuries. The effects of both are compounded since the heat and steam allow the medicated oils to seep into the body and nourish from the inside.

Abhyanga in Ahmedabad: warm-oil massage, price and benefits

Abhyanga is the classical Ayurvedic full-body massage with warm herbal oil. It is used both as a treatment and as preparation for Panchakarma. At Advait Ayurveda, Gota, Ahmedabad, trained therapists follow the directions of the massage strokes described in Ayurvedic texts.

Price: Abhyanga ₹1,200 per session; Abhyanga with Swedan (herbal steam) ₹1,500 per session.

Benefits of Abhyanga

  • Relieves body ache, stiffness and fatigue
  • Calms Vata, which helps sleep, anxiety and stress
  • Improves circulation and skin texture
  • Supports joint pain, back pain and sciatica treatment
  • Prepares the body for Vaman, Virechana and Basti

How the session is done

After a short check of your pulse and body type, the oil is chosen for you, for example Mahanarayan, Bala-Ashwagandha or Ksheerabala. Warm oil is applied from head to toe with long strokes on the limbs and circular strokes on the joints for about 45 minutes. It is often followed by Swedan (herbal steam) for 10–15 minutes, which lets the oil penetrate and opens the channels.

How many sessions?

For stress and general wellness, 3 to 7 sessions are common. For pain and Vata disorders, a course of 7 to 14 sessions is usually advised. Abhyanga can also be taken once a week for maintenance.

When to avoid

Avoid Abhyanga during fever, indigestion, right after meals, in acute inflammation and in the first days of a cold. Pregnant women should take it only after the doctor’s advice.
