IBS in Ayurveda
IBS closely matches Grahani, a disorder of weak and irregular digestive fire. Stress, irregular meals, heavy and incompatible food and anxiety disturb Vata in the gut. The aim is to make digestion steady again, not just to stop the symptom of the day.
Our IBS plan
- Small, regular, freshly cooked meals; identifying trigger foods
- Takra (spiced buttermilk) and easily digested food as advised
- Ayurvedic medicines to steady digestion and reduce gas and cramps
- Stress care: routine, breathing, and Shirodhara when anxiety is high
- Basti for long-standing Vata-type IBS when suitable

Frequently asked questions
Can IBS be treated with Ayurveda?
Many IBS patients improve with a steady diet, Ayurvedic medicines and stress care. The goal is fewer flare-ups and a predictable bowel; results differ from person to person.
Is IBS related to stress?
Yes. Stress and anxiety often trigger IBS flares, so stress care is part of the treatment plan.
Is buttermilk good for IBS?
Fresh, thin, spiced buttermilk (takra) is classically used for Grahani, but the amount and timing are advised for each patient.

IBS and the gut–mind link
Ayurveda describes IBS as Grahani: the small intestine cannot hold and digest food properly, so stools alternate between loose and hard. Stress and anxiety make it worse because Vata disturbs both the mind and the gut.
| IBS type | Main signs | Ayurvedic focus |
|---|---|---|
| IBS-D | Urgency and loose stools after meals | Grahani-stabilising herbs, Takra (buttermilk) therapy |
| IBS-C | Hard stools, bloating | Vata-pacifying diet, oil Basti |
| IBS-M | Alternating pattern | Routine, Agni correction, stress care |

- Thin buttermilk with roasted jeera and rock salt after lunch
- Moong khichdi and pomegranate on bad days
- Avoid raw salads at night, rajma, chole and excess dairy during flares
- Eat slowly and at fixed times; practise Anulom Vilom daily
