Ayurvedic Shiro Basti Treatment
Advait Ayurveda offers you solutions to many of your physical and mental problems that seem chronic and everlasting. That is why today Ayurvedic therapies have become so trendy and one of the highly praised therapy is Shiro Basti Therapy.
The word Shiro means “head” and Basti means “to retain” hence the process of retaining the medicated/herbal oil with the help of a leather cap over the shir Pradesh (head region) is known as the Shiro Basti.
Actually the the word Basti is connected with the Shiro but it doesn’t mean that it is a type of basti because in earlier days to carry out the basti procedure the urinary bladder of animals are used to hold the basti dravyas (drugs) similarly in Shiro Basti the skin of animals is used to hold the oil on the head region which is called as the Shiro Basti yantra, therefore, it is called as the Shiro Basti.
Coined by bringing together two Sanskrit terms – Shiro (head) and Basti (container), ShiroBasti is like a reservoir on your head to strengthen your mind and prevent psychosomatic diseases. It not only relaxes your head but also rejuvenates each and every cell of your body, thereby enhancing your chances of fighting with mental pressure and tension effectively.
Shiro Basti has been used to treat a variety of conditions including eye diseases, sinusitis, allergic rhinitis, greying of hair, neurological disorders, memory loss, insomnia, hearing impairment, tinnitus, vertigo, Meniere’s disease and certain types of skin diseases like psoriasis. It is also used non-medicinally at spas for its relaxing properties.

Shiro Basti in Ahmedabad: oil pooling therapy for the head
Shiro Basti is one of the strongest Ayurvedic therapies for the head and nervous system. A tall leather or rexine cap, open at the top, is fixed around the head and filled with warm medicated oil, which is kept for 30–45 minutes. It is stronger than Shirodhara and is used for deep-seated Vata disorders.

- Chronic migraine and headache

The head is shaved or the hair is oiled, the cap is sealed with black gram paste, and warm oil such as Ksheerabala or Dhanwantaram is poured in. The temperature is kept steady. After the prescribed time, the oil is removed and the head, neck and shoulders are gently massaged.
Course
Usually 7 sessions, sometimes 14, as decided by the doctor. It is often combined with Nasya, Abhyanga and internal medicines.
