Raktamokshan, meaning "letting out impure blood", is one of the five classical Panchakarma procedures. The most commonly used form is Jalaukavacharana, leech therapy. How it works
Ayurveda holds that some diseases arise from vitiated blood (rakta dushti) and aggravated Pitta. Removing a small amount of blood from the affected area is believed to reduce local congestion, inflammation and itching. Leech saliva also contains natural substances that reduce clotting and swelling.

Most people feel only a mild pinch at first, then very little, because leech saliva has a natural numbing effect.

Is leech therapy safe?
Jalaukavacharana (leech therapy) uses medicinal leeches bred for therapy, applied under sterile conditions by trained staff. Each leech is used for one patient only. It is used for chronic eczema, non-healing wounds, selected psoriasis patches, varicose veins and some joint swellings.
- Mild itching or oozing at the bite site can occur for a day
- It is not done in anaemia, bleeding disorders, pregnancy or for patients on blood thinners
- You need a haemoglobin and bleeding-time check before the procedure
- Usually 3–6 sittings at weekly intervals
