Why constipation happens

Low water and fibre intake, dry and processed food, irregular meals, lack of exercise, long sitting, ignoring the urge, travel and stress are common causes. Thyroid problems and some medicines can also cause it. Ayurveda sees constipation as aggravated Vata, which dries and slows the bowel.

Our treatment plan

  • Warm water, soaked or cooked vegetables, fruits and some ghee as advised
  • A fixed morning toilet routine and daily walking
  • Ayurvedic medicines that are gentle and not habit-forming
  • Abhyanga and Basti for long-standing Vata-type constipation
  • Weaning off daily laxatives step by step

When to see a doctor urgently

See a doctor promptly for blood in the stool, black stools, severe abdominal pain or swelling, vomiting, unexplained weight loss, or a sudden change in bowel habit after age 45.

Frequently asked questions

Can I stop laxatives with Ayurvedic treatment?

Many patients reduce and then stop daily laxatives as diet, routine and Ayurvedic medicines take effect. This is done step by step, not suddenly.

Is triphala good for constipation?

Triphala is commonly used, but it does not suit everyone. Dr. Goswami chooses medicines after checking your body type and digestion.

How much water should I drink?

Most adults do well with about 2.5 to 3 litres of water a day, mostly warm, unless your doctor has advised otherwise.

Constipation: why laxatives stop working

Chronic constipation is mainly a Vata disorder: dryness and irregularity in the colon. Regular laxatives irritate the bowel and it becomes lazy. Ayurveda restores moisture, rhythm and digestive strength so that the bowel works on its own.
