Swedana:
Swedana is commonly known as steam therapy in India. The procedure is done by inducing sweat with the help of steam and medicated herbal decoctions.
The process is done after snehana and before the administration of Pradhana karma in Panchkarma treatment. The main objective behind this therapy is to dilate the channels of the body to detach the toxins from the tissues.
The heat is generated directly known as saagni or indirectly termed as niragni to liquefy the doshas and clear the obstruction in channels of circulation and directs the doshas to selective places from where they can be expelled easily.

Types:
There are different varieties of Swedana that varies as per the doshas one need to derive. We have listed two main types of swedana as follows:
BashpaSweda:
The fomentation is done by making the person sit in the chamber where steam derives from boiling herbal decoction.
NaadiSweda:
Naadi Sweda is a more penetrating type of wet heat than Bashpa Sweda. This is given to the whole body, using a tube but the importance is given to thick and complex structures of joints.
